Story

An unusual creature, loosely resembling an anthropomorphized serval. Her body feels almost like a dense rubber ball; slightly bouncy, but mostly stiff. Her tangentially feline origins occasionally manifest in atypical habits such as pressing her hands on people’s faces or fidgeting with one of those ball track cat toys.

Much of Cellval’s background is unknown to the cast of Chaos Zone, herself included, but she doesn’t let that bother her. She makes the most of the time she has now, often hanging out with Orange and Sese, curiously exploring the world, and greatly valuing any friendship she forms.

Abilities

Slash Claw

Cellval slashes at the opponent to deal damage.

Cutter Type

Image is from Mega Man 7 (video game, 1995).

Cel-Barrier

Cellval summons a hexagon-shaped barrier, covering herself and allies. The barrier briefly protects anyone covered from weaker attacks, slightly reduces damage from stronger attacks, and slightly increases the damage dealt by those protected.

Assembly/Shield Type

U-Turn

Cellval rushes at the target, hitting them with a melee strike, then rebounds backwards a safe distance away from the target.

Beast/Swift Type

Exact image source is unknown; possible sources include Pokémon Sun (video game, 2016), Pokémon Moon (video game, 2016), Pokémon Ultra Sun (video game, 2017), and Pokémon Ultra Moon (video game, 2017).

Steadfast Bomber

Cellval puts all her strength, willpower, and care for others into a meteor-like flying rush, crashing into the opponent while also slashing them hard, dealing incredible damage. Deals extra damage if the opponent is inflicted with a status effect.

Earth/Light Type

Voice

General Description

Preteen; gentle, curious, and sometimes blunt; speaks in short sentences, rarely using words with more than 3 syllables

Behind the Scenes

I feel among my Chaos Zone characters who have origins in media that I otherwise don’t care much about (such as Re-Class and Daikokuten), Cellval stands out, as I’ve almost completely isolated her from her Kemono Friends origins without even alluding to them, and it makes her a bit strange to explain since most questions about her nature and history involve her home series.

To simplify it: Kemono Friends is a franchise focused on “Friends”; not just companions, but a unique concept of humanoid versions of animals. The main antagonists of the franchise, “Celliens”, are inanimate objects given form. Cellval’s part in all of this dates back to the original 2015 Kemono Friends video game, where she was a Cellien doppelganger of one of the main characters, a serval “Friend” (I don’t entirely know how this happened, even having researched the story). Over the course of the story, Cellval formed a friendship with the cast, and eventually became a “Friend” herself (this “real girl”-esque story is why I referred to her as “Formerly Faux-Furred”). The odd description I gave of her body feel was my attempt at carrying over the franchise’s concept of Celliens being “rigid yet wiggly”.

All that aside, I was interested in Cellval’s unusual design, relative obscurity, and curious personality, and decided to plop her into a Chaos Zone plotline early 2023. Thing is, the plotline ended up being almost entirely action-focused, with very few moments for the characters to interact with each other. While I don’t have coherent plans on how to make it happen, I do want to try returning to Cellval in my writing; most of the personality traits written under “Story” are things that I plan to expand on in such future writing.
