Story

A lesser-known youkai in her home land of Gensokyo, Orange used to constantly seek out opportunities to make a name for herself. Be it battling mysterious robots or collecting rare artifacts, she was eager to find the thing that would make her be seen as an equal to others, and not treated like she had to stay behind because she was a kid (even if she was).

This reached its apex when Orange met Sese; the skeleton child initially sought out Orange’s help as Orange seemed like someone more familiar than Gensokyo than Sese, and while Orange acted quite affable on the outside, in truth she was hoping she found her chance to meet someone who would look up to her instead of down.

However, when Orange witnessed some of Sese’s greatest powers, she began to doubt herself, and eventually she thought Sese didn’t need her anymore; she was surprised to hear from Sese that they always saw Orange as just a good friend, and thinking this over, Orange decided to drop the act…and become a real friend to Sese. The two are rarely seen apart (and just as rarely are they apart from their later friend Cellval), and often they take turns being the curious inquisitor to the other’s interests.

One thing that hasn’t change about Orange after all this time is how much she understands her limits…that is to say, she doesn’t. She’s very prone to throwing herself into danger, and at times Sese or Cellval can be the only thing keeping her from rushing into a deadly encounter.

Abilities

Spinning Baton

Orange throws her baton, which spins in the air, striking the opponent multiple times before flying back to her.

Swift Type

Blitz Whip

“Whips” of electric energy expand from the tips of Orange’s baton as she twirls it, striking the target with a thin lightning bolt with each lash.

Electric/Swift Type

Lightning Conductor

Orange raises her baton in the air, and uses electric magic to summon a lightning bolt right above her, which rains down and surrounds her in an burst of electric energy.

Electric/Steel Type

Phosphoratorium

Orange envelops her baton in Electric magic and tosses it forward, leaving behind a trail of electricity. She then dashes under the trail of electricity to catch her baton at a certain distance.

Behind the Scenes

Orange was something of a “quick and easy” introduction in The Chaos Zone; I had already been interested in her due to being an obscure forgotten Touhou character, and at some point in August 2020, I decided to drop her into a battle and have fun with her. It wasn’t until May 2021 that I sought out to develop her more, using the aforementioned scenario with Sese to show an additional side to her besides “reckless fighting child”. She’s probably one of my simplest Chaos Zone characters, but still one of my favorites.
