Story

An elusive humanoid with a wireframe-like appearance, YuugenMagan Visage comes from another world, where she used to be a “connector” to five eye creatures (she and said eyes collectively being known as YuugenMagan); through unknown means, she was disconnected from these eyes, leaving her by herself.

YuugenMagan Visage, or “Yuugen-V”, has a rather quiet demeanor. While she tends to doubt her own power, she won’t hesitate to give advice when she can. Her humble attitude doesn’t mean she’s keen on being outright disrespected, either, and if she thinks someone’s being wronged, the last thing she’d want to do is turn a blind eye.

In recent times, Yuugen-V has formed a platonic bond living with Mack, and the two watch over the young Terumi, though Yuugen-V’s relation with the child is more like an older sister than a mother.

Abilities

Star Flare

Yuugen-V summons 3 small stars above her that fly towards the opponent. Deals mild damage.

Shine Type

Zan

Wielding Impact magic, Yuugen-V creates a tall, pillar-like shockwave, dealing damage and pushing opponents away. The intensity and size of the shockwave depends on the power level: Zan is the lowest power level, Zanma is stronger, and Zandyne is the strongest. The variants Mazan, Mazanma, and Mazandyne also exist, and act like their similarly-named counterparts besides that they target all opponents instead of just one.

Impact Type

Frei

Wielding Explode magic, Yuugen-V summons a glowing orb of volatile energy, and detonates it shortly after (usually over the opponent). The intensity and size of the explosion depends on the power level: Frei is the lowest power level, Freila is stronger, and Freidyne is the strongest. The variants Mafrei, Mafreila, and Mafreidyne also exist, and act like their similarly-named counterparts besides that they target all opponents instead of just one.

Explode Type

Shoot

The user summons several ballistic-like orbs of Missile magic, aiming all of them at a single target. The number of projectiles depends on the power level: The known power levels are Shoot, Shootra, Shootga, and Shootja.

Missile Type

Kron

The user summons a pole of Time magic that strikes the opponent overhead. The intensity depends on the power level: Kron is the lowest power level, Kronul is stronger, and Krondyne is the strongest. The variants Makron, Makronul, and Makronyne also exist, and act like their similarly-named counterparts besides that they target all opponents instead of just one.

Time Type

YuugenMagan Visage also has the ability to briefly transform into a lightning bolt-like shape to dodge attacks.

Behind the Scenes

I find the character of YuugenMagan from Highly Responsive to Prayers quite interesting among the greater cast of Touhou; most significant characters in the series have a clear humanoid form of sorts, and while Highly Responsive to Prayers is no stranger to character designs one might not see in newer Touhou media, YuugenMagan stands out to me with their form of 5 connected eyes and what might be a humanoid figure in the center. That said, I wasn’t the first person to use YuugenMagan in The Chaos Zone, and rules with the forum’s writing prevented me from taking the reigns.

This is where the idea for YuugenMagan Visage was born: The person who used YuugenMagan used a design that omitted the humanoid shape in the middle in favor of the five eyes speaking, so one day I was inspired to invent a character who was the exact opposite, being the humanoid shape of YuugenMagan without the five eyes; the detail of her coming from “another world” was meant to clarify that the YuugenMagan that Yuugen-V split from was not the same character being used already.

I didn’t have much of an idea of what kind of person YuugenMagan Visage was at first, the only ideas I had gathered being that she was physically frail (based on how the humanoid part of YuugenMagan can’t actually be attacked in Highly Responsive to Prayers, and re-interpreting that as Yuugen-V avoiding combat back when she was part of her world’s YuugenMagan), and that she was stoic. Much of her personality came from deciding how she’d react to Mack, Terumi, and the other characters in her debut plotline. Despite this, I still feel Yuugen-V has a strong character independent of them, and I simply realized it through deciding how she would handle situations as she was forced into them.

A big thing I tried to avoid when writing YuugenMagan Visage was relegating her to an old-fashioned feminine role: While she’s close with Mack, I don’t view them as romantic partners, and although Terumi is under their shared care, I preferred having Yuugen-V be less of a mother and more like a big sister figure trying her best to be a guardian in the absence of parents (something like the relationship between Nani and Lilo in the 2002 movie Lilo and Stitch).
