Locations
The setting of The Chaos Zone is vast, with numerous significant locations on Earth, on other planets, and even in other parts of reality. This page is dedicated to listing some of these locations, especially when further context on what they are is useful to understand what’s being described on another page of the website.
Gensokyo
Gensokyo is the main setting of the Touhou Project series, from which several of my characters originate from. It’s a fantasy world (in fact, its name is Japanese for “Land of Illusions” or “Land of Fantasy”), home to many youkai and similar mythological beings.
A unique aspect of Gensokyo in Chaos Zone is how it connects to the rest of the world in contrast to official Touhou media; in the official Touhou series, Gensokyo is something of a safe haven for the fantasy ideas it houses, as the rest of the world of Touhou (the “Outside World” as it’s called in the series) is believing less and less in such ideas. In the sci-fi and fantasy-filled world of Chaos Zone, on the other hand, this is a non-issue, to the point one could argue people believe in ideas even more surreal than those in Gensokyo. Because of this, Gensokyo is just a part of Earth in Chaos Zone, being located somewhere in Japan.
Characters I’ve written in Chaos Zone who live in Gensokyo include:
Gensokyo’s Hells
While the afterlife seems to depend on special contexts in Chaos Zone (including who characters are written by), Touhou still has its own unique versions of “Hell”, possibly independent of where most named characters go when they die:
- The current Hell is – at least in theory – where souls from Gensokyo judged too sinful go, at least temporarily. Like the Hell of Japanese mythology, this Hell is meant to essentially rehabilitate souls; they will be punished with torment for some time, sure, but eventually they will be reincarnated.
The inner details of this Hell have never really been explored in Chaos Zone, so this information may very well not match up with the writing in the same way I assume. What does match up is that the “current Hell” has a sub-section called the Animal Realm, inhabited by animal spirits who live in a “might makes right” kind of civilization, forcing them to align themselves with one of the mob-like factions living there, each one specializing in a different kind of attack (aerial attacks, strikes from behind, or even sneaky traps). - The Old Hell is a region that once served the purpose the “current Hell” does, but was abandoned due to overpopulation and age. Many souls were left behind in the move to the “current Hell”, making Old Hell kind of a prison for them. Many creatures, such as youkai, have taken up residence here.
- Unique to Chaos Zone is the First Hell, based on the Hell location from the first Touhou game, 1997’s Touhou Reiiden ~ The Highly Responsive to Prayers. The first five Touhou games officially have a very nebulous connection to the sixth game onward, with interviews with the series creator suggesting that priority goes to the story of the newer games. Chaos Zone decides to combine them more, however, hence the idea of First Hell: a Hell that existed before the “current Hell” or the Old Hell, abandoned for reasons unknown. It isn’t even known if any souls still roam this Hell.
Only two of the characters I’ve written have lived in any of these Hells:
- Konngara (used to live in First Hell)
- Yuuma (used to live in the Animal Realm of the “current” Hell)
Ruin Stage
A minor location from Puyo Puyo~n (video game, 1999), and one of only a few defined locations from the Puyo Puyo series to appear in Chaos Zone. Despite being…well, a set of ruins, the area is actually somewhat populated.
Characters I’ve written in Chaos Zone who live in Ruin Stage include:
- Dual Lamia
- Yuuma
Mugenri
Mugenri is the main setting of the Len’en series. Like Gensokyo, it’s a fantasy world home to various youkai and mythological beings, but it is much more divided from the “real” world. Even in Chaos Zone it’s not entirely clear how characters from Mugenri end up in the main setting or vice versa, save for one or two strange exceptions.
Characters I’ve written in Chaos Zone who originally lived in Mugenri include:
