Robots and Youkai

The Chaos Zone is home to all sorts of entities, many with unique enough origins that it’s hard to call them “species”, but similar enough to each other that most are essentially “people”. While most, like Yoshis and Kongs, are specific enough that I’d rather explain them on the character pages, two stand out as particularly common: Robots and Youkai. Thus, I have put together this page to explain both of them.

Robots

While there are some exceptions, most robots in Chaos Zone have fully-developed personalities; they have feelings, they can question authority, and they probably won’t break down if you say “This sentence is false”; if a human can do it, the robots of Chaos Zone can do it too.

With that said, there are essentially two or three categories robots can be placed under when it comes to how their minds were like when first built:

Pre-Programmed Robots

These robots were built with a developed personality already programmed into them. This doesn’t mean they can’t change from this personality, it just means they didn’t have to learn as much as some other robots.

Such robots include:

  • Robots from the “Classic” Mega Man series, or closely derived from it:
    • The DOSBots: Dyna Man, Volt Man, and Sonic Man
    • The Revolt Robots: D-R Shark Man, D-R Wave Man, Flow-R Blade Man, Rho-volt Torch Man, Disast-R Oil Man, and Mechabit
    • Dangan Man
    • Crescendo
    • The Fighting Mecha Team: Up’n’Down, Foot Holder, Prop-Top, Peterchy, Dachone, and Ben K
    • Express Man
    • Shadow Digital
    • Corporal Smaplar
  • Reverse Man
  • Neon, Mecha Sonic, Robo Sonic, and Silver Sonic
  • Mack
  • Heavy Magician
  • Li’l Miss Marshmallow
  • Mango Sentinel

Reploids

A type of robot from the Mega Man X series. These robots are identified by their human-like free will and thought processes; admittedly, with the increased number of robots in Chaos Zone showing these traits without being designated as Reploids, the line between Reploids and non-Reploids is kind of blurry; regardless, there are robots who are labeled as Reploids.

Unknown Robots

The origins of some robots aren’t fully understood, so it’s not known how exactly they formed their personalities.

Limited

While technically its own bio-mechanical can of worms, most entities who are born from Limited resemble robots more than anything else, so I think they’re worth mentioning.

Youkai

Also written as “yōkai”, they are supernatural entities from Japanese folklore, and especially common characters in the Touhou and Len’en franchises. The Touhou series especially has certain details about the nature of youkai, and why they exist in the series the way they do; for various reasons (most of all the main setting of the Touhou series being more smoothly integrated into Chaos Zone than it is into its own wider universe), many details are simplified, and youkai not only coexist with humans more easily in Chaos Zone, but can live among them more easily. Thus, besides their supernatural origins, they are still treated as “people”.
