Sonic Man

The Aquatic Echo

Water/Laser Type
Original Media: Mega Man (video game, DOS, 1990)
Story
One of the three “DOSBots”, a series of robots built by the same creator who see each other as brothers.
Sonic Man’s personality could be compared to the “Ego” of psychoanalytic theory; even during frantic conflict, he spends plenty of time thinking out the most logical solution to a problem. It’s rare for him to put his emotions first, but when he does, it’s usually for the sake of his brothers Dyna Man and Volt Man.
Voice
General Description
Adult; stoic and calm; often deadpan
Behind the Scenes
Sonic Man’s design in his original game (see the Gallery) seems a bit esoteric for a water-themed Mega Man boss, but I think I see the vision: His use of bouncing sound projectiles reminds me a lot of how dolphins use echolocation to find things, and I think that’s an interesting angle to go; it’s something that I’ve really focused on when writing Sonic Man, making him out to be a strategic sniper/trap-setter with strong senses. I’ve also incorporated it into his design (currently not fully drawn), turning his trident into a sort of tuning fork-trident mix.
While I’ve developed his abilities well, as a character I worry Sonic Man is the weakest link of the three DOSBot brothers. I gave him a kind of goofy dynamic of bickering with Dyna Man in my first bits of writing with him, but as I’ve developed Volt Man more, I feel Sonic Man has kind of fallen behind, and he’s the DOSBot I’m most likely to forget about unless the situation calls for his aquatic abilities. I do still enjoy him as part of my writing, though.
