The Fusion’s Alter-Coalition
(This page and story is a major work in progress)
Foreword
The most important thing I must get out of the way is that this is essentially another group’s fan project with my cast loosely inserted into the narrative. The fan project is called Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, and it’s a collaborative effort between multiple people, with some entering or exiting the project over the course of its development (which has been going on since roughly 2007). The game focuses around video games of all kinds being fused into one reality, with a loose focus on the Super Mario games and their style of platforming.
The reason I’ve considered this strange fan project of a fan project is that Mushroom Kingdom Fusion is a very nostalgic game for me, and its large-scale crossover nature may have been one of the reasons I gravitated towards having such a mix of characters from different origins in my own writing. I’ve reached out to the developers of MKF to make sure they’re okay with me writing something like this, and so far I’ve been given the OK. If anything changes, I can probably modify the story into something else.
Another oddity of this project is that, as of the start of its writing, Mushroom Kingdom Fusion‘s story is not actually finished. This kind of works out as the ideas I’ve been writing haven’t been in chronological order in the first place: My plan is to basically split this story up into several smaller segments, providing sufficient context for where everything in the writing stands, and seeing how much I fill in the blanks as time goes on, including as the game itself fills in the remaining blanks in its own story.
If you want to play Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, you can find it by clicking here. I want to give a shout out to the many developers of MKF for making such a cool game (as well as the many people who have lended their art to the game without being part of the dev team proper), and in particular developers Kirbman and TAxMAN for giving me the OK to put this writing to paper.
Glossary
Within this story, any characters that are only being written as extensions of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion‘s story (as opposed to proper additions to my cast) will be signified with a yellow border around their dialogue portraits.
My Characters
- Bandanna Waddle Dee: Also known as “Bandanna Dee“, or “B-Dee“. A character from the Kirby video game series. His name is usually spelled “bandana” (with one “n” before the last “a” instead of two), but I’ve committed to the alternate spelling.

Story
Outline of the Game/Story
Mushroom Kingdom Fusion takes place over ten worlds. The game is rather open-ended, allowing players to choose which worlds they want to tackle sooner than later; the only major restrictions are that World 1 cannot be completely cleared without clearing another world, and World 0 (the tenth and final world) cannot be accessed until all other worlds have been completed (or at least, that’s the plan for the final version; World 0 is not available to play in the current release of the game). For “The Fusion’s Alter-Coalition”, I’ve chosen this order for the worlds and levels:
- World 1, up to the level “Dire Dire Docks”
- World 2
- World 3
- World 4, up to the level “Antenora”
- World 1, continuing with the level “Rift Valley” and pausing again with the main path of the level “Isle of Mystery”
- World 8
- World 4, continuing with the level “Corpse of the Behemoth” and progressing all the way to the final level of the world
- World 7
- World 1, a brief trip to an alternate path in “Isle of Mystery”
- World 5
- World 1, continuing with most of the remaining levels, including the final level of the world; the visit ends with a trip to an alternate path in the level “Crystal Palace”
- World 6
- World 1, a brief trip to an alternate path in “Barren Badlands”
- World 9, up to a major secret accessed through the level “Ceres Distress”
- Brief trips to Worlds 1 through 8, visiting levels that were locked behind the aforementioned World 9 secret (as well as a few other levels that were skipped over the first time around)
- The rest of World 9, up to the end
The story would end with World 0, though since it’s not currently available I don’t have a plan for it written out yet.
“The Adventure Begins”
(Loosely based on the opening cutscene of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion)
(placeholder story information below)
- The story begins with a large number of characters being sucked into a swirling purple portal, each one seeing passing visions of other worlds that are also being infested with portals
World 1: The Mushroom Kingdom
(placeholder story information below)
- Descant finds herself in the level “The Entryway”, and quickly begins to reunite with other acquaintances such as R.O.B., Sanae, Mechabit, and Dr. Doppler
- The small reunited cast finds themselves learning of the Fusion and the mastermind behind it, the driving conflict here mostly unchanged from Mushroom Kingdom Fusion besides who’s being given this information
- The group of focal characters (henceforth referred to as the “Brash Cast”) continues through the Mushroom Kingdom, finding more familiar faces with each level they go through (and recruiting one new face to their cause)
World 2: Alternate Earth
World 3: The Megaverse
World 4: The Demon Realm
World 1-2: Return to the Mushroom Kingdom
World 8: Avenue of Memories
World 4-2: Ending the Demon War
